Do you remember the Ford Explorer Sport? That model was rolled out in the early days of the Explorer's release, a special trim level of the popular five-passenger sport utility vehicle. The Explorer Sport was eventually discontinued and the Explorer itself was updated, shunning its truck platform for a unibody, car-based chassis.
For 2013, the Explorer Sport has returned, an all-wheel-drive model big on performance and off-road management.
Engine and Transmission
The 2013 Ford Explorer Sport is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine. This EcoBoost motor produces 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and makes 350 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm. This 24-valve, direct injection engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with shifting capabilities. Ford also includes paddle activation for people seeking spirited driving.
The Explorer sport takes regular grade gasoline. It is EPA-rated at 16 mpg around the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
Drivetrain and Suspension
The Explorer Sport is outfitted with a Terrain Management System, bringing four-wheel drive capabilities to this model. Drivers can choose from four settings: snow, sand, mud and hill descent.
Drivers benefit from electric power steering and a sport-tuned suspension. Front MacPherson strut suspension and a stabilizer bar is complemented by an independent multilink rear suspension with a stabilizer bar. Seating capacity is for six or seven passengers. Total passenger volume measures 151.7 cubic feet. Cargo volume is 21 cubic feet behind the third row seat, 43.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down and 80.7 cubic feet behind the first row.
Interior Highlights
The Sport's interior features ample passenger room and is generously appointed. Contrasting stitching can be found across the seats and on the steering wheel, with two-tone leather, brushed aluminum trim and Sport logos placed prominently.
This model also offers many of the amenities today's drivers want and expect. Ford SYNC with MyFord Touch, a wi-fi hotspot for passengers and Bluetooth connectivity are standard. Remote start, a manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel column, dual zone climate control and a 12-speaker premium audio system are also included. A navigation system with a trial SiriusXM satellite radio system is available.
