The Jeep Compass is soldiering on, a compact crossover sport utility vehicle that seats five. This SUV, twin to the Jeep Patriot, has been updated for the 2014 model year. A refreshed exterior, a six-speed automatic transmission and additional safety features are included. The new model goes on sale in the second quarter of 2013.
Engines and Transmissions
The 2014 Jeep Compass comes equipped with a 2.0-liter in-line four cylinder engine. This engine makes 158 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 141 foot-pounds of torque at 5,000 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission is standard; a six-speed automatic is optional.
Also available is a 2.4-liter in-line four cylinder engine. This engine makes 172 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 165 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. Like the smaller engine, this one offers the same transmission pairings.
Fuel Economy
Fuel economy comes in at 23 mpg around the city and 30 mpg on the highway for the base configuration. Other numbers include 23 mpg in town and 28 mpg on the highway for the 2.4-liter engine equipped with a manual transmission or 20 mpg around town and 23 mpg on the highway for 4WD model equipped with an off-road package.
This model runs on regular grade gasoline. A 13.6-gallon fuel tank can be found on 2WD models; 4WD models get a 13.5-gallon fuel tank.
Vehicle Dimensions
The compact Jeep Compass sits on a 103.7-inch wheelbase and is 175.1 inches long by 71.4 inches wide bay 65 inches tall. This model rides on 17-inch all-terrain tires and offers a ground clearance of 9.1 inches. Its curb weight ranges from 3,097 to 3,354 pounds.
Head room measures 40.7 inches up front and 39.9 inches in the rear. Legroom comes in at 40.6 inches up front and 39.4 inches in the back. Shoulder room measures 54.6 inches up front and 54 inches in the back. Hip room comes in at 52.3 inches in the front row and 51 inches in the back.
Interior volume measures 101.3 cubic feet. Cargo capacity behind the rear seat is 22.7 cubic feet; fold down the second row seat and it measures 53.6 cubic feet.
Model Highlights
Jeep outfits the Compass with numerous standard convenience features. These include power windows, power door locks, air conditioning, keyless entry, heated side mirrors, illuminated cup holders, cruise control, front seat active head restraints, fog lamps and an outside temperature display.
Top safety features include front, front side and side curtain airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, hill start assist, electronic roll mitigation and stability control.
Compass Limited
Choose the Compass Limited edition and your SUV is outfitted with a power sunroof, provides Bluetooth connectivity, features a 9-speaker Bose audio system and is outfitted with an advanced version of the Chrysler UConnect system. Navigation, SiriusXM travel line and a trailer towing preparation package are included.
